September 1, 2012 is the perfect day to go out on a short stroll with your family in support of childhood apaxia! For those of you that know Casey, her sweet Maverick was diagnosed with apaxia last year. They are starting a walk to raise awareness and money for the Childhood Apaxia of Speech Association of North America. Come out and walk with them or just donate! Below is the email I got from the Reeds with Mav's story and all the details.
Email:
For those of you who don’t know, our son, Maverick, was
diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech last year. Apraxia is a neurological
disorder that affects Mav’s ability to produce speech. He knows what he wants
to say, but his brain has trouble communicating to his mouth how to form the
words. After a lot of speech therapy and hard work on his part, Maverick can
talk, but it is still difficult for him and apraxia is more than likely
something he will struggle with for the rest of his life.
Casey and I, along with the University of Tulsa Student
Speech, Language and Hearing Association, are coordinating a fundraiser to
raise awareness and provide support and research for Childhood Apraxia of
Speech.
The 2012 Maverick’s
Walk for Apraxia will be held on September 1, 2012, at TU’s Campus (Thomas
Plaza). All proceeds will benefit Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of
North America (CASANA), a 501(c)(3) public charity and the only National
non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to children with apraxia of
speech and their families.

We are asking for
your help and support in our fundraising efforts, either by registering to walk
or making a donation.
Here is how it works:
If you want to walk: (a
short, 1.5 mile, family-friendly event- bring your kids and strollers)
- Register online by choosing Register Here. You can join team Maverick or start your own with your company, family, or church. Members of your family need to register as individual walkers so everyone will receive a free t-shirt. Registration Fees are $20 per adult and $10 per child. As a walker, you can set your own fundraising goal and encourage people to sponsor you by making donations. CASANA will set up your own webpage for you so you can refer people there to make sponsoring you easy. Prizes will be given to the individuals and teams who raise the most money.
If you want to
donate:
- Sponsor a walker online by choosing Sponsor a Walker and then enter the name Maverick Reed or anyone else you know who is walking.
OR
- Sponsor the walk itself my making an in-kind donation of water, refreshments or prizes for walkers (or money that can be used for these items). This gets you (or your company) listed on event publications, t-shirts, etc. as an official sponsor of the walk. To make an in-kind donation, email Casey at reed.cassandra@gmail.com
All of the donations,
including the walk registration fees, are tax deductable.
Please spread the
word and forward this email to your friends and family.
Thank you so much for your support. This is obviously a
cause that is very near and dear to our hearts.
